Coming Soon!

As a native Brit living in the US, I take advantage of the very long American summer school holiday and head back across the pond for a little time with family and friends.
This time is always wonderful, but it’s also a great opportunity to both take a break and to allow the creative juices to flow.
The UK seems to get fashion trends ahead of the US and it’s always lovely to see what the colours of the upcoming season are going to be. I’ve noticed lots of ochre and camel so far this year and it’s always good to have complimentary pieces in stock.

I also have a bunch of larger events this fall, which I’m super excited about, but it means I have a lot of work to do in order to have sufficient variety and stock levels, in addition to my Etsy-listed items.

One of my events has specifically asked for me to bring additional stained glass pieces in order to add this as an offering to their fair and I have some great ideas for small wall hanging pieces. I’m excited to get started on these and it will give me an opportunity to try out my glass saw that I bought a while ago and am yet to use. As I work on them, they’ll be posted to Instagram.

I’ve created a selection of small pendant necklaces. Sometimes a larger pendant might not work with a neckline and in this case, a smaller one works perfectly – giving just the right amount of sparkle to an outfit.

I also want to expand my offerings beyond pendant necklaces and the couple of chainmaille necklaces with glass accents that I have done to date. My sister particularly always has lovely layered necklaces, so I am going to try and create some that incorporate some glass pieces. I also love natural beads and this seems a great opportunity to create unique longer pieces and diversify from pendants.

I’ve had great feedback about the little heart keyrings I started making this spring, so these will also feature in the fall and winter selections available. I’ve also made a new little display just for them!

Also available this fall, which weren’t last, are an expanded selection of earrings with sterling silver findings. My dichroic studs in particular have sold very well with sterling silver posts and I want to be able to offer these in person at my events.

As always, my in person events are a great opportunity to connect with some of the local customers I’ve met in the past few years and show the new items in person. Dichroic glass is one of those materials that is very difficult to photograph well and although I feel I’ve made great strides in this, I still regularly get feedback and reviews that the items look so much nicer in person versus in a photograph. This of course is great for a customer, when their purchase is even better than they thought, but, it’s lovely to be able to show the full lovely, sparkliness in all its glory in person!

Getting Projects Finished....

I've been working on the glass for my front door for over a year. Things have come up so many times and I've just not had the time to be able to get it finished and installed.
Today was the day that pigs finally flew. My front door panel was installed.
I'll add that I still have to get the one finished sidelight 'sandwiched' in tempered glass and I have yet to draw and put together the other sidelight.

But....wow. So worth the work. A complete original.

2 Down, 1 To Go!

Well, it seems like my new year's resolution to actually get my front door panels finished has had some effect!

Aside from a little patina (the 'stain' for the solder - I don't like silver) touchup, it's ready to be sandwiched inside tempered glass and go into the sidelight!

Just one more panel to do - better get to drawing!

Soldering (Almost) Finished!

It actually stands up under its own weight now...

Today I finished off the last piece of soldering. I will still need to remove a couple of mushrooms (where the solder bleeds out of the other side of the piece) and get rid of the little spikes that you sometimes get.
So, all I need to do is finish that last bit, frame it in zinc and patina, then it's ready for sandwiching!
The glass will need to be sandwiched in tempered glass because it's going in a door and that's what building codes require, but, other than that, it's really close to going in!
After this piece, I have two more to do, since I also need to do the sidelights, but, I promise I won't bore everyone to quite the extent I did with this one!

More Soldering!

Side 1 soldering complete.

Today brought the completion of the soldering on the one side of the panel, the big turnover, pattern removal and the start of soldering on the reverse side.
Reverse side soldering started
Removing the pattern from underneath really showed how different the colours are on a different background! I simply cannot wait to see it in our door.

Latest Door Progress

I've been working on the piece for 3 days this week, but kept forgetting my camera, so, you're only getting pics today!
First news - I finally finished foiling and grinding. That's a huge relief! Here is the pic of the foiled piece. The tape and pins you see are to keep the 'strong line' reinforcement in place and also to keep things in place, since the strong line tends to act like a spring.
Foiling complete!

The next pic is after today's soldering! I've secured most of the piece now, but, especially the areas with the strong line, so, I was able to remove the tape and pins. Just soldering to finish (both sides), putting on a zinc frame and patina and then decide whether to sandwich it permanently between two panes with silicone, or to just butt it and silcone up next... We will see on that front.
Start of soldering!

More Leaves!

Yes, I know this is getting old now, but, I'm taking a picture after each work day on the panel. This is today's end point, most of the leaves are cut and fit, just a few left.
I also brought the border pieces home with me to foil.
As for the colours, the background looks more blue than it actually is because the pattern was printed on blue paper, the only paper the Kinko's I went to had in the size I needed..

Woohoo! We Have Leaves!

The first of the leaves went into the panel today! The background is now fitted, although as foiling happens I will likely need to adjust things a little.
But, today, I was able to add the first of the leaves, which will progress in colour towards the top. So exciting to finally see a little colour!

Another Day, Another Pic!

After today's grinding and fitting session, I would say the panel is now about 2/3 fit. Eek!
My goal is for the end of Saturday to bring an end to the fitting portion, so on Sunday I can move onto foiling.

Door Piece Update!

After today, this is how the door piece looks. I have added the border and am now starting to 'fit' the rest of the pieces.
I'm hoping that I will be finished with the grinding portion of the panel by the end of Saturday. Then onto foiling and soldering!

Progress!

Past the halfway point (for cutting at least!)

I've had 2 days of work on my stained glass piece for the front door and I feel like I have made pretty good progress. All the white pieces are cut and most of the grey background pieces are cut.
I have a lot of grinding to do and I also have the 2 borders and all the leaves to cut. Then I need to fit everything before I can start foiling and soldering. But, looking good so far! I'm so excited to see how it turns out!

Colour!

Here's the pattern coloured. It doesn't reflect the exact colours, more just what I could do with a pack of pencils, but it gives an idea as to what I'm thinking...

New Project!

For those that don't know, I'm going to be doing the stained glass for the front door of a house we're building. Last night I drew out the main panel of the door. I will also have 2 sidelights that will be similar..
There will be a few glasslines that need adding I'm sure, but this is roughly it...Thoughts?

Finished!

My second project is finished! I'm so proud of myself.
I finished up the soldering, framing and patina today and brought the new baby home.  I think it looks really cool and I have plans to put it in an interior door at some point.
Please tell me it does actually look like an aspen?!

Next to come will be some Christmas ornaments I think. I want to practice my soldering and glass cutting and at the same time make something I can give to my family and friends.
After that, I have a really big project in mind...

Foiling Complete!

I finished the foiling of my panel today, so, when I get to it, I'm ready to start soldering! Yippeee!!
It looks better even just cleaned up a little with the numbers missing.
Cool or what?!
If you're wondering why the piece must be 'foiled' first, it's because I need to solder it together, and, solder doesn't stick to glass, so the adhesive-backed foil provides that metal to metal contact to hold everything together.

New Stained Glass Piece!

This is the progress I've made thus far in my second stained glass piece. I figured I would actually take a couple of 'in-process' pics with this one to show how the piece is done. These were taken with the camera on my phone, so you'll have to excuse the poor quality. The first shows the panel with all the pieces cut, ground and fitted into the pattern.

The next pic shows my progress today on foiling the pieces - I got about a third of it completed. I think it fits in pretty well with the season right now. I can't wait to see how it is when it's finished!

Stained Glass!

I've been slowly adding some pendants to the Etsy shop, but this post is more to showcase another little project I've been working on. I'm very proud of it, since it's my first piece, I've never soldered before and I actually like it!
I've been taking a stained glass class, which consists of one sampler project (this one) for which you choose your own glass and colours and another independent project, where you take everything you learned from doing the first and apply it to something that you have chosen for yourself.
There are a bunch of steps involved with constructing a stained glass piece. Here they are, very roughly of course -

- Choose a pattern
- Choose your glass
- Transfer pattern to glass
- Cut glass
- Grind glass to fit exactly in your pattern
- Foil edge of glass (solder doesn't stick to glass)
- Assemble and flux
- Solder both sides
- Cut frame and solder together
- Clean flux off
- Patina
- Clean patina off and polish.

And - ta-da!

This is what you get -
My first stained glass piece - otherwise known as "Sauron". And yes, I know I'm a dork.
I finally think I've found a hobby in glass work where my ever so slight tendencies towards anal retentiveness are useful....
